About to be released on Blu Ray and DVD is The Adjustment Bureau, a reality bending sci-fi thriller that comes in the vein of The Matrix
, Dark City
and The Truman Show
, movies that questioned the very nature of existence, reality and fate. I am a huge fan of these kind of movies, when they are done well. It was not until the 90s when a growing fear of government power, its technology and 'The Big Brother state' started garnering public attention that movies like these became a Hollywood mainstay, and since The Matrix
trilogy's release, there have been many clones of the series that have generously borrowed from them to varying degrees of success, the most recent being The Adjustment Bureau
.
A more worthy successor to The Matrix
than its two sequels, The Adjustment Bureau
finds an unrealistically young potential presidential candidate's life (Matt Damon) disrupted by a 'chance' encounter with a quirky ballerina (Emily 'The Devil Wears Prada
' Blunt). However what starts of as a charming romantic comedy abruptly turns into a conspiracy drama rife with 1950s and 1960s Cold War paranoia, with the main conflict of the film based on a secret, seemingly omnipresent government type organization that is controlling the lives and destinies of everyone on the planet.
Based on the short story ‘Adjustment Team
’ by Philip K. Dick, The Adjustment Bureau
was adapted and directed by George Nolfi. Like The Matrix
, Nolfi’s film depicts supernatural guardians not as magical entities but as smartly dressed men. However unlike The Matrix, these adjusters hark back to the 1950s, when the story was written, dressed in that era's clothing, and even featuring John Slattery from “Mad Men” as the key antagonist, behaving like a shady government agent who in another film would be assigned to root out Communist sympathizers from that era.
If you are looking for a film that is as epic as Inception
, you wont find that here, but if you are a fan of The Matrix yet hated its sequels... plus have a thing for romantic comedies with depth, then this film is for you. Ignore the ridiculous religious and philosophical conclusion this film makes, that not even God can control the fates of men and just enjoy it for what it is, a fun fantasy. 7/10
